Viral Marketing as a Social Networking Tool

from: Deb St. George - DebStGeorge.com

Viral marketing can be used successfully as a social networking tool. Any person or business can use viral marketing to work in the ways that are best suited for your industry needs, keeping what works and eliminating any problems. One way that businesses are turning to for successful viral marketing campaigns is the use of social networking sites. Social network sites are some of the most trafficked sites on the Web, and millions of individuals and businesses are using on a weekly or even daily basis. Normally users turn to social networking sites to find those they lost contact with or to make new friends in similar industries and to keep in touch with business contacts. Top earning sites such as MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn however, can be used in creative ways beyond what the site is commonly used for.

With viral marketing you let others do some of the work, by giving them information about your product or idea and using them to tell others and get a buzz going about whatever your using the viral marketing campaign for. For example, a person visits your site and reads an eBook of value; they provide the link to a friend who then forwards it again. As the cycle grows your status goes up, you increase your traffic and are more likely to convert some visitors to a loyal audience who will keep coming back for more. This is the similar idea that has been used in television commercials for personal products. Working to generate more buzz than most any other method. Actually, the television commercials form of advertising and marketing were simply viral marketing and was used even way before the term was coined.

Being a member of sites like MySpace and Facebook allow you meet other members and interact with them both personally and professionally. It is advantageous to use these sites as much as is possible and in whatever instances that are feasible. With your MySpace or Facebook site, you can link any materials to it and encourage visitors to go to it whenever they can. If the visitor does decide to visit your site, they may like what they see and encourage other friends to do the same. Essentially, this works as free advertising for any service, any product or any creative idea that you may have.

The forums and website pages at MySpace and Facebook can also be used to bring attention to any causes or calls to action that you may have for yourself or your business. The goal in creating the site is to get people to visit it and to tell others about it. Additionally, sites like Facebook and MySpace work cohesively as social networks and bring large amounts of people together at one time.

As these masses of people come together, it is encouraged to give them something of value. In many cases, this value can be had in the form of information and information marketing. When these articles are given out, they are also shared among the masses and the name of your company acts as a liaison for the business. Since these social bookmaking sites are their own communities, there are people who spend a significant amount of time on them networking and meeting others. This is optimal for socializing, networking and growing a business online.
